Summary

This chapter has two parts.

Part 1 concerns issues relating to ships maintenance and their impacts on ship energy efficiency. Examples of the rules and regulations influencing the shipping industry are the International Safety Management Code (ISM), the International Convention on Standards of Training Certification and Watch keeping for seafarers (STCW), the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS) and the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from ships (MARPOL).

Part 2 includes an overview of management systems. Company management is responsible to set a company policy which describes where and how the company should aim and perform in terms of quality, safety, environmental and energy conservation issues and providing adequate resources and tools to ensure that the company policy could be successfully implemented. In addition, the management is responsible for setting realistic and achievable targets for the company’s quality, safety, environmental and energy performance. One of the most prominent management systems that is already mandatory in shipping is the ISM Code that as the name implies deals with shipping safety at its core.
